Porsche Cayman GT4: mechanical breakdown
A GT4 in an owner's Porsche lineup
Fourteen seconds, filed under exhaust sounds. The caption lists a white Porsche 911, a 991 GT3 and a 718 Cayman GT4, and the uploader says the GT3 is theirs. It names no events and no parts, so there is nothing more to attribute to the clip than a comparison of these cars.
Cylinder deactivation on a flat-six
Under light load the 4.0-litre flat-six shuts down one bank of cylinders to save fuel. Three cylinders fire instead of six, so the pulse spacing in the exhaust changes while the bank is off. The engine management decides when that happens, which makes the map as much a part of the sound strategy as the pipework. Full load brings both banks back, and the naturally aspirated flat-six then runs to its 8,000 rpm redline for 414 hp. On European-market cars the petrol particulate filter further mutes what comes out of the tailpipes.
Filter delete and front-axle lift
Sound is the main reason owners touch this car. An aftermarket exhaust or a particulate-filter delete restores a louder, sharper flat-six note, which matters most on European cars where the filter mutes it. The trade-off is legal: filter deletes are not road-legal in many markets and can affect warranty. The other common fix is mechanical. The front splitter sits low and scrapes on kerbs and ramps, so some owners fit a front-axle lift system. It raises the nose at the touch of a button, at the price of added cost and weight.
