Porsche Cayman GT4: mechanical breakdown

Racing Yellow GT4 RS, exhaust topic

A 24-second clip of a Racing Yellow 718 Cayman GT4 RS, filed under exhaust sounds. The uploader names no parts and no events, so there is nothing further to attribute to it. The RS in the fact sheet is the 493 hp car with the 4.0-litre flat-six, PDK only.

Bank shutoff and the particulate filter

Engine management on the 4.0 flat-six includes cylinder deactivation: under light load one bank is switched off to save fuel. That strategy lives in the maps, and it is the reason a car at part throttle is not running all of its cylinders. Sound is shaped by a second piece of hardware. European-market cars carry a petrol particulate filter in the exhaust, and it mutes the note noticeably compared with the 981 GT4. A European GT4 RS therefore has a quieter tailpipe than its 9,000 rpm redline suggests.

Filter delete, brakes and front lift

Sound drives most of the work. An aftermarket exhaust or a particulate-filter delete brings back a louder, sharper flat-six; the filter delete is not road-legal in many markets and can affect warranty. Track alignment adds front grip, and uprated pads and fluid resist fade, but tyres wear faster and the pads add noise and dust on the street. The low front splitter is easily scraped on kerbs and ramps, which is the case for a front-axle lift system. It stops damage on driveways and speed bumps and costs money and weight.
