Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

AT-only licence, GR Yaris test

The caption is in Japanese and asks what happens when a driver with an AT-only licence takes the GR Yaris out, calling it a different car from the ordinary Yaris and mentioning an unexpected pitfall. No parts or events are named. The automatic in question is the 8-speed GR-DAT, offered from the 2024 facelift with 276 hp and 390 Nm.

One turbo, one intercooler, one limit

The G16E-GTS is a 1618 cc inline-three with a single turbocharger feeding an air-to-air intercooler. That layout is simple and compact, and it makes 360 Nm in the early cars and 390 Nm after the 2024 facelift. The weak point is thermal. An air-to-air core depends on airflow through the front of the car, so on track in hot conditions the intake charge heats up, and the ECU cuts power to protect the engine. The result is a car that is quick for a lap and slower on the next. Hard use also ties into the reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption on early cars, so heat management matters beyond lap times.

Remap, intercooler and downpipe trade-offs

The caption names no parts, so the sheet's usual list applies. An ECU remap is first: it gains a lot of power and torque on the stock turbo, at the cost of higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. The upgraded intercooler answers the heat soak, giving lower intake temperatures and steadier power on track, but an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the turbo and wastegate louder and support higher-boost tunes. They also bring drone, plus emissions and noise legality concerns. Given the early-car oil consumption and cylinder 3 reports, the cooling work is the sensible part to do before any remap.
