Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Caption pairs GR Yaris with Evo
A 27-second clip, captioned as the GR Yaris against the Lancer Evo with the same rally legend behind both. It names no events and no parts. The car on this page is the GXPA16, whose G16E-GTS is a 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder driving all four wheels through GR-Four.
One turbo and an air-to-air intercooler
Induction on the G16E-GTS is simple: a single turbocharger feeding an air-to-air intercooler. That is enough for 257 hp and 360 Nm from 1618 cc. The intercooler is the limit. It works by moving air across the core, so on track in hot conditions the intake charge warms up and the ECU pulls power. The sheet lists that heat soak as a known weak point. Single-turbo plumbing also explains the noise. Turbo and wastegate sounds are audible on the stock car, and an aftermarket intake or downpipe brings them forward.
Why owners remap and add cooling
Most owners start with an ECU remap, because it gives large gains in power and torque on the stock turbo. The cost is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems, which matters given early-car reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption. Next comes an upgraded intercooler. It lowers intake temperatures and keeps power consistent on track, though an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the car louder and support higher-boost tunes. Emissions and noise legality become concerns, and drone follows.
