Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Turkish market arrival of the facelift car
A 17-second clip announcing the GR Yaris in Turkey, with all-wheel drive and a manual named in the caption. The 280 PS rating it quotes is the 2024 facelift figure, which is 276 hp and 390 Nm from the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS. That update also added an 8-speed GR-DAT automatic as an option, so the manual is now a choice.
Carbon roof and aluminium panels on a short body
Toyota built a three-door body that no other Yaris uses. The roof is carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer, while the bonnet, doors and tailgate are aluminium. Every one of those panels sits high or far from the center of the car, so replacing steel there takes weight off exactly where it raises the center of gravity and adds roll. The result is a kerb weight of 1280 kg. That mass goes to all four wheels through the GR-Four system, and the pairing of low weight and AWD is what produces 5.5 s from 0 to 100 km/h in the base 257 hp car. A hatch this small leaves little room for anything heavier.
Remap, intercooler and downpipe options
Owners start with an ECU remap, because the stock turbo gives large gains in power and torque. The trade-off is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. Track users next fit an upgraded intercooler, which holds intake temperatures down and keeps power consistent where the stock car suffers heat soak and a power reduction. An oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and support higher-boost tunes, at the cost of emissions and noise legality concerns, plus drone. Early cars had cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption reports, mostly with track use.
