Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Track day footage, 88 seconds
A GR Yaris on a track day. The Turkish caption says the car was built for the track, and that is the only detail given. The GXPA16 is the 1,280 kg, 257 hp car with GR-Four all-wheel drive, so any hard lap puts sustained load on the G16E-GTS and its single turbo.
Single turbo and air-to-air intercooler
One turbocharger feeds the 1,618 cc G16E-GTS, and the charge air passes through an air-to-air intercooler before it reaches the engine. Cooling depends on airflow through the core. On track in hot conditions the intake air heats up (heat soak), and the ECU responds by cutting power. That is the trade for a compact single-turbo layout making 257 hp and 360 Nm from three cylinders. Short laps in cool weather hide it; long sessions in heat expose it. Early cars also carry reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption, particularly with track use, so intake temperature is not the only thing owners watch.
Intercooler first, then remap and downpipe
The uploader named no parts, so the sheet's list applies. Given the heat soak problem, an upgraded intercooler is the logical start: lower intake temperatures and more consistent power on track. An oversized core adds turbo lag. An ECU remap gives large gains in power and torque on the stock turbo, with higher engine stress and possible warranty problems as the price. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and support higher-boost tunes. Against that sit emissions and noise legality concerns, plus drone at cruise.
