Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Door sound test on a GR Yaris
An 11-second door sound and insulation test on a GR Yaris, shot from the driver's seat. The caption names no events and no modified parts, so the clip is stock as far as the brief goes. Nothing else is stated about it.
Single turbo and air-to-air intercooler
The G16E-GTS feeds its 1618 cc through one turbocharger and an air-to-air intercooler, and that pairing sets two traits. First, the sound: the turbo and wastegate are audible on this engine, and an aftermarket intake or downpipe makes them louder. Over the three-cylinder thrum, which is off-beat next to a four-cylinder hot hatch, they are the second layer of noise. Second, the heat. An air-to-air core relies on outside air passing through it, so in hot conditions on track the charge air warms up and power drops. That is the heat soak the sheet lists as a weak point. The 257 hp and 360 Nm figures are for a cool, fresh core.
Intercooler, remap and downpipe trade-offs
An upgraded intercooler goes after the heat soak. It lowers intake temperatures and keeps power consistent on track; the trade-offs are cost and, if the core is oversized, more turbo lag. The ECU remap is the cheap route to large gains in power and torque on the stock turbo. The price is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. A downpipe and exhaust make the car louder and support higher-boost tunes, with emissions and noise legality concerns and drone as the cost. The sheet notes cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption on early cars, particularly with track use.
