Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

Flat out at Caminos del Inca

A GR Yaris at the Caminos del Inca 2026 rally, 19 seconds long. The caption gives no parts, so the sound is the stock G16E-GTS: an inline-three whose off-beat thrum differs from four-cylinder hot hatches, with the single turbo audible on top.

Single turbo and air-to-air intercooler

Boost on the G16E-GTS comes from one turbocharger, and the compressed air passes through an air-to-air intercooler before it reaches the 1618 cc engine. That cooler relies on airflow through its core, so it works best at speed and loses ground when the car is slow or the ambient air is hot. Compressing air heats it, and hotter intake air means the ECU has to pull power to stay safe. The sheet lists exactly this as a weak point: heat soak on track in hot conditions, with reduced power. One turbo and one core keep the plumbing simple, but all 257 hp depends on that single cooler staying effective.

Cooling and exhaust first, then the remap

Owners who track the car go after intake temperature, because heat soak is the sheet's complaint. A larger intercooler gives lower intake temperatures and more consistent power. The cost is money, and a core that is too big adds turbo lag, since the pressurized volume to fill grows. Next is the downpipe and exhaust. Removing restriction after the turbine makes the turbo and wastegate louder, and it lets the engine run higher-boost tunes. Emissions and noise legality become a problem, and drone comes with it. An ECU remap adds large power and torque on the stock turbo. Engine stress rises, and early cars already have reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption.
