Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Ten seconds of GR Yaris exhaust
A GR Yaris, filed under exhaust sounds, 10 s long. Nothing else is stated about the clip. The engine behind the note is the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS, an inline-three: one cylinder fires every 240 degrees of crank rotation, an interval a four-cylinder never produces.
GR-Four split modes and engine output
Torque split is a driver setting on the GR Yaris. GR-Four sends 60:40 front to rear in Normal, 30:70 in Sport and 50:50 in Track. Sport is the only mode that puts the larger share on the rear axle. Everything the system distributes comes from one source: the G16E-GTS, rated at 257 hp and 360 Nm on a 1280 kg car with a 6-speed manual. A higher-output variant exists. The facelift raises that to 276 hp and 390 Nm, and the split options are the same family of modes. The selector changes where torque goes, never how much the engine makes.
Remap first, then intercooler and downpipe
Most owners start with an ECU remap. On the stock turbo it gives large gains in power and torque, and the price is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. Early cars already show reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption, particularly on track. An upgraded intercooler addresses the heat soak that cuts power in hot conditions; an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the turbo and wastegate noise louder and support higher-boost tunes. Drone is the cost, along with emissions and noise legality.
