Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

A 51-second GR Yaris clip

The caption names only the car: a Toyota GR Yaris, in a 51-second clip filed under modifications. It lists no parts and no events, so there is nothing to say about what happens on screen. What the car is: a GXPA16 with the G16E-GTS, a 1.6-litre turbo three-cylinder rated at 257 hp in the base specification.

One turbo, air-to-air intercooler

The G16E-GTS uses a single turbocharger feeding an air-to-air intercooler. From 1618 cc it makes 257 hp and 360 Nm, so the one turbo has to move a lot of air for a small engine. Air-to-air cooling is light and simple, but it depends on airflow through the core. On track in hot conditions the intake charge heats up, the ECU pulls power, and that is the heat soak the sheet lists as a weak point. The turbo also shapes the sound. Turbo and wastegate noise is audible on this engine, and more so with an aftermarket intake or downpipe, because there is less hardware muffling it.

Remap first, then intercooler and exhaust

The usual first step is an ECU remap. It gives large gains in power and torque on the stock turbo, at the cost of higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. Early cars have reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption, particularly with track use, so extra load is not free. An upgraded intercooler addresses heat soak: lower intake temperatures and more consistent power on track. If the core is oversized, turbo lag increases. A downpipe and exhaust make the car louder and support higher-boost tunes. The trade-offs are emissions and noise legality concerns, plus drone.
