Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Rotating a manual GR Yaris
A 60-second clip of a manual GR Yaris taking a mountain corner. The caption, translated, says the driver pushes hard on the front end to bring the tail around. The car is the GR-Four AWD, so the rear is driven too; the clip names no drive mode, so the torque split in use is not stated.
iMT rev-matching on the 6-speed
Downshifts are where the 6-speed manual does its work in a corner. The iMT function blips the throttle to match revs, and it can be switched on or off. Left on, the system matches engine speed to the lower gear before the clutch comes up, so the driveline does not jolt the rear axle mid-corner. Switched off, the driver does the heel-and-toe and decides how much engine braking reaches the rear. With 360 Nm from the 1.6-litre G16E-GTS, that choice shows up in how settled the 1280 kg car stays when the throttle goes back on.
Remaps, intercoolers and downpipes
Most owners start with an ECU remap, because the stock turbo gives large gains in power and torque. The cost is engine stress and possible warranty trouble, which carries weight on early cars with cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption. An upgraded intercooler is the answer to heat soak on track, where power gets pulled in hot conditions; an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and allow higher-boost tunes. Expect drone, and check local noise and emissions law before fitting one.
