Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

A GR Yaris on a track

Track Day footage of a GR Yaris, 174 seconds long. The caption is a short line about driving on a track and names no parts or modifications. On a circuit the GR-Four system has a mode made for it: Track sends torque 50:50 between the axles.

Body and drivetrain built for the GR

Toyota gave the GR Yaris a three-door shell that no other Yaris uses. The roof is carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer, and the bonnet, doors and tailgate are aluminium, which keeps kerb weight at 1280 kg with an all-wheel-drive system on board. Weight high on the car is what the lighter panels reduce, so the 257 hp from the G16E-GTS has less mass to rotate and brake. GR-Four then spreads the 360 Nm: 60:40 in Normal, 30:70 in Sport toward the rear, 50:50 in Track. Each setting changes how much the rear axle pushes the car out of a corner.

Common changes to the G16E-GTS

The uploader named no parts. Among owners, the ECU remap is the usual first step: it brings large gains in power and torque on the stock single turbo, and costs engine stress and possibly the warranty. An upgraded intercooler follows for anyone driving hard, since it lowers intake temperatures and keeps output steady; an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and allow higher-boost tunes. The price is drone, plus emissions and noise legality questions depending on where the car is registered.
