Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown
Rovanperä on snow in 11 seconds
Eleven seconds, captioned in Spanish with Kalle Rovanperä's name and a line about going flat out on snow. No parts or events are named. The road car behind this page is the GXPA16 GR Yaris, whose G16E-GTS is a 1618 cc turbo three with a 6-speed manual and GR-Four all-wheel drive.
What iMT does with the 6-speed
Gear changes on the GXPA16 go through a 6-speed manual with iMT, a rev-matching function that can be switched on or off. With it on, the system blips the throttle on downshifts, so the 257 hp G16E-GTS lands on the right revs without the driver doing heel-and-toe. Switch it off and the matching is entirely manual: a late or lazy blip leaves a mismatch between engine speed and gearbox speed on a car that sends drive to all four wheels. The 360 Nm peak means each gear covers a lot of road, which is why the choice matters more on a loose surface than on tarmac.
Remap first, then intercooler and downpipe
An ECU remap is the usual first step because the stock turbo gives large gains in power and torque from software alone. The price is higher stress on an engine with cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption on early cars, plus possible warranty problems. The upgraded intercooler comes next: heat soak on track cuts power in hot conditions, and a bigger core holds intake temperatures down for more consistent output. An oversized core adds turbo lag and cost. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and support higher-boost tunes, with drone and emissions and noise legality as the trade-off.
