Single turbo and air-to-air intercooler

Compressing intake air heats it, and on the G16E-GTS a single turbocharger feeds an air-to-air intercooler that strips that heat out before the charge reaches the cylinders. Stock output is 257 hp and 360 Nm from 1,618 cc. The limit shows on track in hot conditions: heat soak raises intake temperature and the ECU cuts power to protect the engine. One turbo also explains the audible turbo and wastegate noises, which get louder with an aftermarket intake or downpipe. Early cars have reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption, particularly with track use, so sustained high charge temperatures are worth avoiding.

Remap, intercooler and downpipe trade-offs

An ECU remap is the usual first step. It gives large power and torque gains on the stock turbo, and it raises engine stress and can cause warranty problems, which matters given the cylinder 3 reports on early cars. An upgraded intercooler is the logical partner: lower intake temperatures and consistent power on track, at the cost of money and extra turbo lag if the core is oversized. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and support higher-boost tunes. Emissions and noise legality become concerns, and drone comes with it.
