Toyota Supra: mechanical breakdown

A 28-second MK4 edit

A 28-second edit of an A80 Supra. The caption says only "MK4 Edit" and names no events and no parts, so there is nothing specific to attribute to this car beyond the generation. The site files it under Modifications, and the 2JZ-GTE under the bonnet is the reason: it is the engine most owners of this car end up changing.

Why old vacuum lines ruin boost

The 2JZ-GTE runs sequential twin turbos, with the second turbo joining at higher rpm. That handover is controlled by vacuum hoses and valves, and those deteriorate with age. A cracked hose or a sticking valve means the second turbo comes in late, partially or not at all, and the car feels flat above the point where it should be pulling hardest at 320 hp. Poor boost behaviour on an A80 is more often a leak than a worn turbo. Owners go two ways. Some replace the hoses and valves and keep the original layout, which preserves the low-rpm response. Others delete the whole system by converting to a single turbo, which removes the vacuum plumbing as a failure point.

Single turbo swaps and fueling

The single turbo conversion is the standard route, because the iron-block 2JZ has far more power potential than the stock sequential setup allows. The trade-off is turbo lag and lost low-rpm response. Fueling goes next: stock injectors and fuel pump limit power once boost is raised, so owners fit larger injectors and a bigger pump, which needs matching engine management tuning. A standalone ECU gives full control of fuel, ignition and boost, at the cost of money and professional tuning. A front-mount intercooler lowers intake temperatures under high boost, though the longer piping can slow response.
