Toyota Supra: mechanical breakdown
An 18-second A80 edit
This is an 18 s edit of an A80 Supra, titled as a Mk4 tribute. The caption names no modifications and no events, so there is nothing specific to attribute to the car in the footage. What can be said is mechanical: the Supra here carries the 2JZ-GTE, a 3.0 L twin-turbo inline-six, in a rear-wheel-drive chassis.
VVT-i and engine management on the 2JZ-GTE
Japanese-market 2JZ-GTE engines gained VVT-i variable valve timing in 1997. That moves cam phasing into the ECU's job list: the computer now sets valve overlap alongside fuel and ignition, and the map decides how much cam advance the engine gets at a given load. The effect is on how the engine breathes across the rev range, which matters on a sequential twin-turbo setup where the second turbo joins at higher rpm. The sheet gives 320 hp and 427 Nm for the turbo car, with the Japanese RZ rated at 280 PS under the gentlemen's agreement. Earlier engines have no cam control, so their character comes from the turbos and the fuel and ignition maps alone.
Fuel and ECU come before boost
Owners go after the iron-block 2JZ-GTE because it has headroom, but the stock injectors and fuel pump run out first once boost is raised. Larger injectors and a bigger pump fix that, and they need matching tuning. A standalone ECU gives full control of fuel, ignition and boost; the cost is money and a professional tuner. The single turbo conversion is the big step. It lifts the power ceiling, but turbo lag rises and low-rpm response drops compared with the sequential setup. A front-mount intercooler lowers intake temperatures under high boost, though the longer piping can slow response.
