BMW M5: mechanical breakdown
A CS in Frozen Deep Green
A 22-second edit of an M5 CS in Frozen Deep Green with yellow DRLs. The caption names no parts and no events, so the clip itself gives little to explain. The car is the lighter, limited-run four-seat M5, rated at 627 hp (635 PS) and 750 Nm.
Hot-vee turbos inside the V
Both turbochargers of the S63B44T4 sit inside the V of the engine, a hot-vee layout, rather than out on the sides of the banks. For a 4395 cc twin-turbo V8 that is the defining feature of the induction side: the whole forced-induction hardware lives in the space between the cylinder banks. The brief names one audible consequence. The engine has a deep turbocharged burble, and the particulate filters fitted to later European cars mute it further. So the same car can sound noticeably different depending on market and build year. Output is 592 hp in the base car, 617 hp in the Competition and 627 hp in the CS, all from the same 750 Nm.
Stage 1 tunes and downpipes
Owners start with the ECU. A stage 1 tune brings large power and torque gains on unchanged hardware, which is why it is the cheapest route past the CS figures. The price is warranty cover and extra load on the drivetrain, here an 8-speed M Steptronic and M xDrive. Next come aftermarket exhaust or downpipes. They make the V8 louder and are the usual supporting part for higher tunes. In return, you get drone, and in some markets legality and emissions problems. Anyone chasing sound on a car with particulate filters is mostly trying to undo that muting.
