Mercedes-AMG C63: mechanical breakdown

W204 C63 S, 21-second exhaust clip

A W204 C63 S, filed under exhaust sounds; the caption calls it aggressive and names no parts or events. The character comes from the M156, a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 with a cross-plane crank. Big bore, 7,200 rpm redline, deep bellow.

From 7G-Tronic to wet-clutch MCT

Early W204 cars pair the M156 with the 7-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic, a conventional automatic with a torque converter. The facelift dropped the converter. In its place sits the 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT, which uses a wet clutch to take up drive. That clutch has to hold 600 Nm, delivered to the rear wheels only, and it is part of how the car reaches 100 km/h in 4.5 s. The converter box and the MCT share the seven-speed layout and the engine, so the choice between them is a question of facelift year, not of power.

Headers, tune and exhaust trade-offs

Headers lead the list. They add power and a sharper, louder note on the M156, and the cost is emissions-legality issues plus a check-engine light unless the car gets a tune. An aftermarket exhaust amplifies the V8 further; at cruise it drones. An ECU tune raises the rev limiter above the stock 7,200 rpm and gives modest gains. Because the engine is naturally aspirated, those gains are smaller than a turbocharged engine returns from the same software.
