Mercedes-AMG G63: mechanical breakdown
114 seconds around a 2026 G63
A 114-second walkaround of a 2026 G63. The caption lists interior, exterior and details, and the only event it names is the interior. It names no parts and no driving, so there is no engine behavior to describe.
Cross-plane crank behind the G63 burble
The M177 is a 3,982 cc twin-turbo V8 built on a cross-plane crankshaft, and that crank is the source of the traditional V8 burble. In Sport modes the overrun adds crackles. The two turbochargers sit inside the V in a hot-V layout, and the engine makes 577 hp and 850 Nm. Where the sound is heard matters as well: the exhausts exit at the sides, ahead of the rear wheels, so the note is loudest from beside the car rather than from behind it. A walkaround filmed at the flank catches the V8 at its most direct.
ECU tunes, valve exhausts and wheels
An ECU tune is the usual first step. Software alone gives the twin-turbo V8 large power and torque gains, but it can affect the warranty and loads the 9-speed automatic and the drivetrain harder. Next comes an aftermarket exhaust with valve control, which makes the V8 louder and more aggressive. The price is drone at cruise and possible noise-regulation trouble. Larger aftermarket wheels sharpen the look, at the cost of a harsher ride and more unsprung weight. Tyres and brakes already wear fast on this heavy car, so any of these changes adds to running costs.
