Mercedes-AMG G63

Both turbochargers of the 4.0-litre M177 sit inside the V, and the engine is a cross-plane V8 rated at 577 hp and 850 Nm. That layout gives the burble, and Sport modes add crackles on overrun. The side-exit pipes ahead of the rear wheels make the car loudest when heard from the side. This page holds 27 clips, 25 tagged G63 and 2 tagged W463A. Captions name a cold start, revving, a launch, acceleration, a drift and an interior clip, one each.

G63: questions owners ask

M177 or M157: what changed in the G63?

The W463 G63 ran the 5.5-litre M157 twin-turbo V8 with 536 hp and 760 Nm, through a 7-speed AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic. The W463A moved to the 4.0-litre M177 with 577 hp and 850 Nm and a 9-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G. Quoted 0-100 km/h falls from 5.4 s to 4.5 s.

Why does the G63 crackle on overrun?

Crackles on overrun are listed for the W463A in Sport modes. The M177 is a cross-plane V8, which is the source of the traditional V8 burble underneath. The fact sheet gives no further detail on the overrun mechanism, and it lists no crackle behavior for the earlier M157 car.

What are the G63's weak points?

Both generations share two: very high weight, which wears tyres and brakes fast, and high fuel consumption. Larger aftermarket wheels add unsprung weight and a harsher ride. An ECU tune on the W463A gives large gains from software alone but loads the gearbox and drivetrain, and can affect warranty.

What does the 2024 G63 facelift add?

A 48-volt integrated starter-generator, which makes it a mild hybrid. Output stays at 577 hp and 850 Nm. The fact sheet lists a quoted 0-100 km/h of 4.4 s for this variant.
