Subaru BRZ

Stock, both BRZ engines run an equal-length exhaust, so the flat-four sounds smooth where an unequal-length Subaru would rumble. On the ZC6, the FA20 adds a tick from its direct injectors at idle. The ZD8 FA24 grows to 2387 cc and adds active sound control through the cabin speakers. Of the 28 clips, four are captioned track and three drift, which is where the FA24 oil starvation reports come from.

BRZ: questions owners ask

ZC6 or ZD8: which BRZ has more power?

ZD8. Its 2.4-litre FA24 makes 228 hp and 249 Nm with a 7500 rpm redline. The ZC6 FA20 is a 2.0-litre with 197 hp, 205 Nm and a 7400 rpm redline. A US-rated manual ZC6 after the 2017 update gets 205 hp and 212 Nm, with a shorter final drive.

Why does a stock BRZ lack the Subaru rumble?

Equal-length exhaust manifold on the ZD8, equal-length header on the ZC6. Aftermarket unequal-length headers add the rumble on the ZC6. Those give less top-end gain than equal-length designs. Some headers also add drone.

What is the FA20 torque dip?

A pronounced mid-range drop around 4,000 rpm on the 2.0-litre FA20. A header plus ECU tune largely fills it and adds top-end power. Costs: emissions legality concerns in some regions, and a louder drone with some headers.

Is the FA24 safe on track?

Early ZD8 cars saw engine failures, frequently linked to sustained high-g track use and oil starvation. Owners commonly fit an oil cooler plus baffled or accusump-style systems. The FA24 is 2387 cc with a 7500 rpm redline; the failures are an oiling problem, not a power one.
