Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

600hp Yaris, Aventador SV, one launch

A 32-second drag race, GR Yaris against a Lamborghini Aventador SV. The uploader states 600hp for the Yaris, where the factory figure is 257 hp and 360 Nm, and names no parts, so how the car got there is not given. The caption names the launch and the acceleration. The Yaris is a 1280 kg car with GR-Four all-wheel drive, so any launch it makes is driven through all four wheels.

Lightweight shell and GR-Four drivetrain

The three-door body exists only on the GR Yaris. Toyota gave it a carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer roof and aluminium for the bonnet, doors and tailgate. Those panels sit high or at the extremities, so removing mass there helps hold kerb weight to 1280 kg and keeps the car light for a hatchback with an AWD driveline. The GR-Four system then splits torque by mode: 60:40 in Normal, 30:70 in Sport and 50:50 in Track. Sport sends most of the drive rearward, Track locks an even split. Each mode changes which axle takes the load first, which matters in a car that is light enough to spin its tires.

What owners change to reach 600hp

Owners chase power on the G16E-GTS because the 1.6-litre three-cylinder responds strongly. An ECU remap gives large gains in power and torque on the stock turbo; the cost is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. An upgraded intercooler is the next step, since the car loses power to heat soak on track in hot conditions. It lowers intake temperatures and evens out power, though an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make it louder and support higher-boost tunes, with drone and legality concerns attached. Early cars have reports of cylinder 3 failures and high oil consumption, particularly with track use.
