BMW M2: mechanical breakdown

Orange M2 in a wedding convoy

An orange BMW M2 leads a wedding convoy, and the clip is tagged as a fly-by. It runs 17 seconds. The caption names no modifications, so nothing here says the car is anything but stock. The brief gives no revs, gear or sound detail for the pass, so none is claimed.

S58 inline-six and its muted note

Under the G87 bonnet is the S58, a 2,993 cc twin-turbo inline-six that BMW also fits to the G80 M3 and G82 M4. It makes 453 hp and 550 Nm in the base car. Two turbochargers sit in the exhaust path and absorb part of each pulse, which is why the note is deeper and more muted than the older naturally aspirated M engines. A further layer is added inside: cabin sound is augmented through the speakers. The CS version of this engine is rated at 523 hp and 650 Nm, automatic only.

ECU tunes, downpipes and exhausts

Most S58 owners start with an ECU tune. Software alone brings large power and torque gains, and the cost is warranty exposure plus more stress on the gearbox and driveline. Downpipes are next: they make the exhaust louder and add further gain when combined with a tune, but emissions and road legality become a problem in many regions. A full aftermarket exhaust gives more volume and character than the stock system. Expect drone at cruise, and the bill.
