BMW M3: mechanical breakdown

A 15-second M3 Competition edit

A 15 s edit of a G80 M3 Competition, cut to a slowed Funk Power track. The caption names no events and no parts, so there is nothing further to say about what the car does on screen.

Two turbos on a 3.0-litre six

The S58 is a 2993 cc inline-six fed by two turbochargers. In the base G80 it makes 473 hp and 550 Nm. The Competition raises that to 503 hp and 650 Nm, and the CS goes to 543 hp with the same 650 Nm. All of that comes from boost on a three-litre displacement, which is why the torque figures sit so far above what a naturally aspirated six of this size would give. The sheet puts the sound down to the turbocharged straight-six layout: smooth, with a rasp. Output steps between variants are decided by the boost the two turbos are allowed to run.

ECU tune and exhaust trade-offs

Tuning starts with the ECU. Because the twin-turbo six is boost-limited by software, a tune delivers large power and torque gains over the 473 hp or 503 hp stock figures. The price is warranty risk and more stress on the driveline. An aftermarket exhaust is the other common change. It gives a louder, more characterful sound than stock, and it brings drone at cruising speed and possible noise-regulation problems. The tune changes how hard the car pulls; the exhaust changes only what it sounds like.
