Mercedes-AMG G63: mechanical breakdown

A 2027 G63 in 25 seconds

The caption calls this a new 2027 Mercedes G63 AMG, and the title frames it as a walkaround and first look. It names no modifications and no events, so there is nothing further to attribute. The platform underneath is the W463A, which carries the 4.0-litre M177 twin-turbo V8 rated at 577 hp.

Why the M177 burbles like a V8

The M177 is a cross-plane V8, and that crank layout is the source of the traditional burble. Cross-plane geometry spaces the firing pulses unevenly within each bank, which gives the low, lumpy rhythm associated with American V8s instead of the even, high-pitched wail of a flat-plane engine. The turbos sit in the V, so the pulses are partly absorbed before they reach the pipes, and the note is deeper rather than sharper. In Sport modes the sheet lists crackles on overrun. The exhaust exits at the side, ahead of the rear wheels, which is why the sound is loudest when heard from beside the car. The 3982 cc displacement and 850 Nm of torque mean the engine rarely needs high revs to make its point.

Tunes, valves and bigger wheels

The first change is usually software. An ECU tune extracts large power and torque gains from the twin-turbo V8 without opening the engine. The trade-off is warranty exposure and more load on the 9-speed automatic and the drivetrain, which already moves a very heavy car. Next comes the exhaust. An aftermarket system with valve control makes the V8 louder and more aggressive, but it adds drone at cruise and can run into noise regulations. Larger wheels change the look. They also cost ride quality and add unsprung weight. Tyres and brakes already wear quickly on this car because of its weight, so heavier wheels do not help.
