Mercedes-AMG G63: mechanical breakdown
Grand Edition walkaround, listed for sale
A 37-second walkaround of a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Grand Edition. The caption presents it as a car for sale. It names no modifications and no events, so there is nothing further to report about this footage.
Nine ratios behind the M177
Behind the 4.0-litre M177 sits the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G, a nine-speed automatic. It has to carry 850 Nm of torque, and the 577 hp that goes with it, into a 4MATIC system with a 40:60 rear-biased split. A multi-clutch automatic of this type is chosen over a torque-converter-only unit for faster shifts, and the sheet quotes 0-100 km/h in 4.5 s. Nine ratios keep the twin-turbo V8 in its torque band across that sprint. The sheet gives no launch-control or shift-time figures, so those stay unquoted. One consequence is clear: every tune that raises torque lands first on this gearbox.
Why owners tune the M177
An ECU tune is the standard first change, because the twin-turbo V8 gains large power and torque from software alone. The cost is more load on the gearbox and drivetrain, and warranty cover can be affected. Next comes an aftermarket exhaust with valve control, which gives a louder, more aggressive V8 note at the price of drone at cruise and possible noise-regulation problems. Larger wheels change the look. They also add unsprung weight and a harsher ride, on a car whose very high weight already wears tyres and brakes quickly.
