Toyota GR Yaris: mechanical breakdown

Caption promises 60 seconds, clip runs 69

Uploader's caption, in German: "Der Toyota GR Yaris in 60 Sekunden". It names no events, no parts and no modifications, so there is nothing further to attribute to the clip. The file itself runs 69 seconds, nine more than the caption claims.

GR-Four torque splits by drive mode

The GR-Four system sends torque front to rear in ratios chosen by drive mode: 60:40 in Normal, 30:70 in Sport and 50:50 in Track. Normal keeps the front axle in charge. Sport shifts most of the drive to the rear, which gives the 1280 kg car a rear-driven feel on the way out of a corner. Track locks an even 50:50. The 360 Nm from the G16E-GTS is the same in every mode; only its destination changes. That is why the mode setting alters how the car rotates and puts power down more than it alters the engine's character.

Remap first, then intercooler and downpipe

The ECU remap comes first. On the stock turbo it brings large gains in power and torque, and the cost is higher engine stress and possible warranty problems. An upgraded intercooler follows: lower intake temperatures and more consistent power on track, though an oversized core adds turbo lag. A downpipe and exhaust make the three-cylinder louder and support higher-boost tunes. Against that sit emissions and noise legality concerns, plus drone at cruise. Owners who go beyond the 257 hp stock rating usually combine all three, since each one depends on the others.
