hp, PS and kW: which one is on the spec sheet?
US and UK figures are usually mechanical horsepower (SAE hp, 1 hp = 550 ft·lbf/s = 0.7457 kW). European manufacturers quote metric horsepower (PS, also CV, ch or pk; 1 PS = 75 kgf·m/s = 0.7355 kW), and EU type approval uses kilowatts. A metric horsepower is about 1.4% smaller than a mechanical one, so the same engine is "625 PS" in Germany and "616 hp" in the US.

- kW = hp × 0.745700 · hp = kW × 1.341022
- kW = PS × 0.735499 · PS = kW × 1.359622
- PS = hp × 1.013870 · hp = PS × 0.986320
These are engine (crank) figures. Wheel horsepower measured on a chassis dyno is typically 10-20% lower because of drivetrain losses, and "bhp" in UK usage is simply mechanical hp.
